Getting Legal Status is a major issue for millions of immigrants, their loved ones and co-workers.
Perhaps you think the above headline is hyperbole but consider this:
1. A decade ago, the film A Day Without a Mexican gave us a tragicomic view of what would happen if every Mexican in California disappeared. The New York Times summarized the movie’s message:
“The mockumentary postulates that the lack of Latino gardeners, nannies, cooks, policeman, maids, teachers, farm workers, construction crews, entertainers, athletes, and the world’s largest growing consumer market would create a social, political, and economic disaster, leaving the concept of the ‘California Dream’ in shambles.”
2. Getting Legal Status for Immigrants is needed to unify families. In 2012, the Pew Research Center pointed out:
“About 15% of all new marriages in the United States in 2010 were between spouses of a different race or ethnicity from one another, more than double the share in 1980 (6.7%). Among all newlyweds in 2010, 9% of whites, 17% of blacks, 26% of Hispanics and 28% of Asians married out.”
Think about that figure for a moment. In 30 years, the number more than doubled. We are closing in on the 50th anniversary of the US Supreme Court decision in Loving v. Virginia, which struck down laws banning interracial marriage. And we just passed the one year mark since the Court ruled in United States v. Windsor that same sex marriages must be recognized by the federal government. Now, due to Windsor. same sex couples can apply for green cards, thereby getting legal status for the immigrant married to the American citizen. FOR ANYONE WHO HAS THEIR FAMILY SEPARATED, THEIR WORLD CERTAINLY FEELS AS IF IT HAS ENDED.
And What About Our Modern Day Commerce?
There is Not a Doubt that our Business World Would End Without People Getting Legal Status.
Just ask Bill Gates, Warren Buffett, and Sheldon Adelson.
These three famous billionaires may not agree politically, but they took the time to join forces and write publicly in support of people getting legal status.
They must know something.
- Gates only founded Microsoft.
- Buffett may be the greatest investor of all time.
- Adelson is arguably the most successful entrepreneur on Earth.
Think of how many jobs these men have created, how much money they have made and then donated to charity.
Here is what they said:
“We believe it borders on insanity to train intelligent and motivated people in our universities — often subsidizing their education — and then to deport them when they graduate. Many of these people, of course, want to return to their home country — and that’s fine. But for those who wish to stay and work in computer science or technology, fields badly in need of their services, let’s roll out the welcome mat.”
I trust their opinions more than most.
