Over the better part of two decades, I have always been fascinated with immigration history.
Just as sports and entertainment reporters compile stories on the greatest athletes and musicians, I thought it would be compelling to talk about the The Best Immigration Attorneys of All Time.
Certainly one of the Greatest was Maurice Roberts.
Mr. Roberts was involved in many of the most significant immigration cases in history.
Here are the most notable facts about Mr. Roberts:
- Born 1910, Newark NJ
- Graduated 1932, summa cum laude from Rutgers Law School
- Practiced law in Newark until 1941
- Worked at INS from 1941-1955
- Chief, INS Adjudications Division, Philadelphia
- Assistant Chief, Investigations, and Deputy General Counsel, INS Central Office in Washington, DC
- Worked at Justice Department Criminal Division from 1955-1968
- Head of Immigration Litigation Unit from 1965-1968
- Personally involved in many well-known US Supreme Court cases
- Chairman, Board of Immigration Appeals, 1968-1974
- Beginning in 1974, Mr. Roberts became Editor-in-Chief of Interpreter Releases, the weekly immigration journal read by immigration lawyers for many, many years
Mr. Roberts was honored by the Attorney General, US Senate, American Immigration Lawyers Association, New Jersey State Bar Association, Federal Bar Association, and National Center for Immigrants’ Rights.
He died in 2001, at the age of 91.
His legacy was unparalleled in immigration history.
