Three Degrees of Law: Harlan York’s New Book Due in April!

By: Harlan York
March 10, 2015

My first book, Three Degrees of Law, is due in April 2015.  The message of the book is Unlocking the Secrets to Happiness in the Legal Universe.

  • I am very excited about this project. Three Degrees of Law has been in the works for some time.
  • Three Degrees of Law started when I observed how attorneys leave practice or work in jobs they hate because of attitude and career direction.
  • Also, I noticed how many law schools obsess over graduates’ bar passage rates in lieu of job placement.
  • So I started to take notes for Three Degrees of Law – from experience and interviews with many colleagues – as well as notable people in entertainment and other fields.
  • I wanted folks to know how to build a practice and a career that they love!
  • After all, I have been this fortunate.
  • I want for readers of Three Degrees of Law to know how to be the best kind of professional who practices law.
  • Three Degrees of Law is for  law students, college kids, parents of students, young attorneys, and veteran lawyers looking for a new perspective, not to forget their spouses.
  • A fundamental message in Three Degrees of Law is the idea that clients and their cases should always be on your mind.
  • Moreover, a vocational attitude on the practice of law will let you to build a practice you love and sustain you for years to come.

To be happy and successful as a lawyer: find a path that you love, practice the best way you can, & work with compassion.

I reject the myth that lawyers must put in twenty hour days doing jobs they hate!

There are hundreds of ways to make use of law school and to have a satisfying career.

In Three Degrees of Law, I point out how apathy will kill a lawyer faster than anything!

Former World Chess Champion Garry Kasparov recently posted on his Facebook & Twitter,

“Congratulations to my friend Harlan York on the release of his book www.3DegreesOfLaw.com in April! If ‘happy lawyers’ sounds like an oxymoron to you, you must read it!”

Professor Lenni Benson of New York Law School -who recently spoke at the White House- wrote:

“I’ve been teaching for over 20 years and often ask law students what do they want out of their legal careers. To be honest, most respond with very vague answers. I encourage them to take some time during (if not before) law school to really talk with attorneys about their daily work lives. Harlan York’s book jump starts that process. It pulls back the curtain on some of the ways lawyers spend their times. Much more realistic than TV or Film, read this engaging book to take a peek into the legal world.”

Author G. Jeffrey MacDonald, who just last week had a news report on Page One of USA Today said:

“Harlan York delivers a rare combination: all the wisdom of an accomplished legal specialist with none of the mind-numbing legalese. He’s a straight shooter with a heart for helping fellow lawyers avoid the pitfalls that lead to disillusionment and despair. Reading Three Degrees of Law could make the difference between muddling through a miserable legal career and staking out an extremely satisfying one.”

And Gabriel Kahn, Professor of Professional Practice, University of Southern California, Annenberg School of Communications and Journalism, had this to say about my book:

“Essential advice for all attorneys seeking to transform their ‘job’ into something more meaningful, a legal ‘vocation.’”
